Herrera de Valdecañas
Municipality of the province of Palencia, Herrera de Valdecañas is situated in the Arlanzón Valley and belongs to the Cerrato Comarca. 30 kilometers away from the capital of the province, the village currently counts with 145 inhabitants (the 1/1/2018), called Herrerenses. The earth there is fertile and rich with iron (hierro), characteristics which gave the city its name.
Inhabited since the Roman period, there existed a Roman villa in the place known as Santa Lucía. Alfonso III reconquered it at the end of the 9th century and in the 10th, it belonged to the diocese of Burgos, in the territory of Palenzuela.
Museum of Palenzuela
10 kilometers away from Herrera de Valdecañas, the villa of Palenzuela was, during the Medieval Age, a very coveted place because of its strategic location. It was then the property of the Castilian Admirals. One should not miss the visit to the museum of Palenzuela. It is located in the clock tower of the city hall and was once used as a prison and warehouse. The museum presents an interesting archaeological exhibit.
